So, you want to buy a house in Frome?
Moving to Frome or looking to buy a new property in Frome?
Frome is a charming, historic town in eastern Somerset. The best way we can introduce it is by simply stating it’s been voted as ‘the best place to live in Britain’ by The Sunday Times (2018). And in their excitement about the town, they even dubbed it “Va-Va-Frome”. But don’t take their word for it… and don’t call it that to the locals. Find out for yourself why many move to Frome and thousands visit every year!
Frome is a brilliant place to buy a house and relocate. It's vibrant yet quaint with a welcoming community who get involved in events that bring this town to life. They also actively help others with fantastic initiatives, such as Frome’s Community Fridge.
If you are creative, you will thrive here. Frome is a market town who remembers its roots and embraces local creativity immensely. Explore a multitude of independent shops, award-winning markets, historic buildings, quaint cafes, cosy pubs, galleries of quirky artists and designers - you could wander the medieval streets for days and continue to discover hidden gems.
Frome may be plonked in swathes of countryside, but it doesn’t mean you’re cut off from larger surrounding towns and cities. There’s a train station with regular trains to Bath (40 minutes) and Bristol (55 minutes). Driving can get you to the M5 in about an hour and you can zip to the M4 in around 45 minutes.
Top tip: Talk like a local! Frome is one of the most mis-pronounced towns in the UK, so be sure to say it as “Froom”.

As soon as you step into Frome, you’ll be struck by how picturesque it is. You won’t be surprised to hear that it’s been voted ‘the most stylish town in the UK’ by Time Out, and that the beautiful and famous regularly traipse the streets (Pearl Lowe, Brett Anderson and Nicolas Cage to name a few!).
As many are now swapping the big city bright lights for slow living in Frome, it’s proving exceptionally popular as a relocation destination. Don’t miss out by waiting too long to get on the property ladder here…
Frome is a Market Town that is keeping traditions alive!
What sets Frome apart from many towns in the UK, is the fact that it has retained its traditional market town status and the locals still follow that way of life. Championing the independent spirit of Frome has helped keep its charm that attracts so many today. The town is busy with people who would rather support their indies and shop at their local butcher or greengrocer than head to a larger supermarket.
The Frome markets create an atmosphere which is rarely seen in UK towns which makes it an enticing place to relocate. Explore weekly markets every Wednesday and Saturday, pick up plant-based produce at the Frome Vegan Market (first weekend of the month), check out the award-winning Frome Farmers Market (every second Saturday of the month) and of course, the famous Frome Independent Market arrives in the summer.
This market town gets whipped into a frenzy on the first Sunday of each month (March to December) with the famous Frome Independent Market. It has a lively atmosphere similar to a mini festival and attracts crowds from all over the country!
The town centre shuts down as thousands descend to the streets for live local music, street entertainment, and market stalls of cheese, cider, crafts and street food. Vintage and retro collectables and clothing are also on offer, plus plants and homewares. It’s guaranteed that you won’t leave empty handed.
Arty Frome.
As we mentioned, Frome champions its creatives and artists through its tight knit community making the village what it is today.
There are two theatres showing regular productions throughout the year. The Frome Memorial Theatre started in 1925 in memory of the fallen in WWI, and The Merlin Theatre is a registered charity which began in 1974. Both are hubs for family-fun at Christmas with sold-out pantomimes.
Cheese and Grain is a former farm produce warehouse which was converted into a market and concert hall in 1997. It’s a not-for-profit music hub with a capacity of 800 and it puts on performances from local bands, cover bands and major international artists. As Frome has strong links with the Eavis family who run the world famous Glastonbury Festival, Cheese and Grain has seen the likes of Fat Boy Slim and the Foo Fighters who caused quite a stir in this wholesome town.
Frome is drenched in beautiful history.
Like it’s close neighbour Bath, Frome has strong ties to natural springs. Frome literally means ‘brisk-flowing water’ and the early town grew around these springs. They continue to supply Frome with fresh, clean water - explore Cheap Street, one of the best preserved medieval streets in Europe, which has a stream running down the middle of the street.
Frome has a wealth of Prehistoric, Roman and Medieval history. Neolithic structures have been discovered in nearby Trudoxhill as well as Iron Age forts at nearby Cley Hill and Roddenberry. Evidence of Roman settlements in villas have also been discovered at Whatley and Selwood!
Head to Frome Museum for a deep understanding of the town’s history. You can also join in on one of Frome’s popular guided walks to get immersed in the colourful history!
The countryside surrounding Frome.
As Frome is in the sparsely populated eastern end of the Mendip Hills, you get easy access to the stunning surrounding countryside which has many walks and beauty spots.
Explore the dog-friendly walking routes; Vallis Woods, Cley Hill, and Heaven’s Gate are all very popular with dog walkers as they are incredibly scenic. You can find out more great routes to take your dog here.
Or get stuck into activities! Longleat Safari Park is only a 10 min drive away with a Centre Parcs located beside it. They provide so much fun and entertainment for the whole family, it will feel like a little holiday despite being a stone’s throw from Frome.
Frome’s House Prices.
It’s no lie that Frome is incredibly popular, especially with Londoners who want a slice of the quiet life! With various broadsheets and publications drawing attention and excitement to Frome with their ‘best places to live in the UK’ lists, house prices have unfortunately crept up.
Frome’s house prices are a lot higher when compared to the surrounding areas, so it may be a place less suited to first-time buyers. If you have a smaller deposit, it may be worth looking to the neighbouring town of Westbury as property prices are considerably lower than Frome.
Westbury still has a lot of appeal and is incredibly family-friendly making it a brilliant place to settle. Many stay long-term here as it also has a strong sense of community which you won’t find in many towns, plus there is plenty of stunning surrounding countryside to explore.
