Westbury satisfies history lovers.
Westbury has a surprisingly deep history! History boffins will be delighted to know that it has a long industrious past, and has five Grade II listed houses and a monument strewn across the town.
Westbury was the epicentre of quality cloth production in the west of England. It was world renowned and the town prospered as a result until the mid-19th century, leaving a legacy in some of its historic buildings.
One of Westbury’s famous historical buildings is the All Saints Church. This Grade I listed building was built in the 14th century and houses an Erasmus Bible. It also has the third heaviest peal of eight bells in the world!
Walk through to Church Street and find one of the oldest operational swimming baths in the country. Built in 1887 by William Laverton, Westbury has one of the oldest Victorian pools that’s still in use today.
The White Horse of Westbury.
You’ll definitely recognise the world-famous White Horse of Westbury! This white horse carved into the hillside in Bratton attracts people from all over Wiltshire and beyond, making it the most characteristic sight of Westbury.
Suspected to have been created in the 18th century, it’s both the oldest and largest White Horse in Wiltshire. It was restored in 1778, and then painted white and set in concrete in the 1950’s.
This historic monument is the centre of outdoor pursuits and activity; dog walks, kite flying, paragliding, you name it! There are also plenty of tracks and paths that cobweb the area, filled with walkers and mountain bikers making the most of the great outdoors.
Westbury is incredibly family-friendly!
When moving to a new location, regardless of whether you have children or not, it means the world to have a safe, family-friendly environment. And Westbury truly gives this experience for all its residents.
